School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds

Choosing the right field of study is one of the most important decisions one has to take in life. When graduating from college, students who choose to engage in further studies need to decide, which degree they would like to take and which university they want matriculate at.

One field of study, which holds promising job opportunities, is a degree in chemistry. The Faculty of Mathematics and Physical Science at the University of Leeds offers both a 3-Year Bachelor (BSc) and a 4-Year (Integrated Masters).

During the first year of study students learn the basics of chemistry, which will provide them with the knowledge to further specialize in the following years. In addition to a theoretical approach, students participate in practical experiments from the first day of the course. For instance students learn how to produce lubricant additives. The university also considers a frequent feedback from the academic staff as highly important, so students have the possibility to address challenging issues at all times.

As students advance they can choose a field of specialization in for example “supramolecular chemistry” or “chemistry of the atmosphere”. If participants choose to take the Integrated Masters degree, they will conduct an in-depth research project during the last year of their studies.

Furthermore students have the opportunity to experience an industrial placement. Here one works for national or international company and collects valuable work experience. This provides a great advantage, as many employers prefer to hire graduates, who have previously worked with experienced chemists. Students are guided by an industrial and an academic supervisor, who are in frequent contact during the placement.

Participants of the 4-year program may also spend the third year of the degree in a foreign country. Having spent one successful year abroad, students are awarded an “International” or “European” degree, which provides many benefits within the industry. Undergraduate students have the possibility to visit the following countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Singapore or the USA.

Experts strongly advice students to take this opportunity, as an understanding for international business is an important asset in a global industry like chemistry.
In addition to excellent tutors and an exceptional student support, the University of Leeds offers a great campus, which is located in the heart of an inspiring and economically booming city. Furthermore the environment of the university is very international. Thus students have the opportunity to built an international network and engage in intercultural exchange.
